What is it?

The mission of Okizu is to provide peer support, respite, mentoring, and recreational programs to meet the needs of all members of families affected by childhood cancer.

Sadly cancer is something almost all of us have experience with.

Several years ago our friends invited us to Okizu’s annual benefit and what we learned that night was nothing short of remarkable. The organization runs a camp for families affected by childhood cancer and the name says it all. Okizu (oak-eye-zoo) from the Sioux language, means unity, to come together, to heal from a hurt, to make whole. The founders and volunteers are truly some of the most selfless people you can meet. After listening to the stories people shared about the impact this camp has had on their lives there was not a dry eye to be found.

Your heart sinks when you hear of anyone being diagnosed with cancer but when it’s a child the news weighs heavier. For more than 33 years, Okizu has been committed to the continuing support of the Oncology, Siblings, Family, Bereavement, and Teens-N-Twenties programs. These programs are the result of a collaborative effort between Okizu and the pediatric oncology treatment centers in Northern California. Their camp gives the entire family an opportunity to break from the routine now forced upon them and laugh or cry or just enjoy the beauty of nature. Okizu may not be curing cancer but they are changing the lives of so many people affected by cancer.

In 2015 more than 3,000 people will have participated in their programs. Donations of any size bring the magic of Okizu to families all year long and make a lasting and positive impact of thousands of people each year.

  • $1,000 sends one child to camp for a week.
  • $500 provides a weekend Family Camp experience.
  • $100 is the cost of food for one camper.
  • $50 provides bus transportation to camp.
